Rise and Shine Mr. Education Minister!

The High School Leaving Certificate Examinations or the 10th standard board exams. Call it by whatever name you may, but it is the first extremely important examination in any student’s life, for, it decides which way the student is headed. Will it be arts or science, or should the student take up commerce? Will the student get admitted into a good college?
These and many more such questions are answered, the day the results of the HSLC are declared. A big day, indeed for the student and for the family as well!
But for the Officials of the Secondary Education Board of Assam, these are not very important issues, for; they have other priorities, like filling up their bank accounts, to look after. They have not shown even an iota of regret or repentance after the controversies and anomalies that have exposed the gaping holes in the system over the last few months. How, you may ask...well…if you thought question papers being leaked is BIG news, if exams being postponed time and again is sad, then think again!
For a few seemingly innocent cows happened to stray into strong rooms at the Goalpara Government High School and managed to destroy just about a little more than a hundred answer scripts which were stored there for evaluation. Yes, scripts which held the fate of so many students within the pages were left to the mercy of nature’s elements at this particular centre.
The blame game is on with Senior officials saying that the school authorities are responsible for the sheer negligence. But, going by the recent records, one can safely say that it’s not just the poor watchman who apparently forgot to lock the gate properly, who can be called careless! Double checking the safety of the papers shouldn’t have been much of a trouble, but then who will go to such lengths for the sake of a few hundred answer sheets?
Problems after problems seem to have crippled the High School Leaving Certificate Examination this year and this one can be listed as one of the problems, for sure. Here’s hoping, against hope that the concerned authorities will wake up from their deep slumber!

Guwahati's own 'Sonagachi'? Are we prepared?

Found this in my files today...something i had written sometime back...in a hurry... I will not defend them and say that they are victims. Despite the fact that most of them are here facing compulsion...they were lured by the money, the money which they need to provide a decent home to their impoverished families. They are now the living proof to the ever booming business of commercial sex in the gateway to the Northeast. Its not like we never knew about what goes on in some pockets of the city. Places like Pandu, Kalapahar, Paltanbazar, Rajgarh, Ganeshguri, Nabin Nagar or Beltola come alive every night. Its not like we never noticed the salwar kameez clad lady at the bus stop near the Judges Field, in the evenings. It has been just about a decade since she picked that vantage point! But we choose to feign ignorance. We want to believe that our brothers, uncles, boyfriend, husband or father would never notice them! Why do they stand at those particular spots then, night after nig...

And thats when you realise if those whom you have depended upon, catch you or just watch you drop into the abyss. And that is why sometimes, complications 'acche hotey hain'  That is one helluva silver lining, I tell you!

Mother.....

Well I am a reporter in a news channel. We are often sent on specific assignments to cover certain events which sometimes turn out to be enlightening sometimes dissapointing and sometimes leave a deep impact on us. Well the only assignment which had my name against it today was 'Foundation stone unveiling ceremony' of the 'Vivanta', our very own Taj at Khanapara, Guwahati, by our CM, alongwith Ratan Tata and a host of other dignitaries. After having covered the event, I came back to office and sat in front of a machine with the sole intention of playing 'Farmville' on facebook. But that was not to be as I had hardly logged in that Parag Da, our Political Editor asked me to take a camera and rush to the Assam Enginering College where Ratan Tata was scheduled to attend another function. I admire Parag Da for his efficiency, wealth of knowledge and managing skills. He asked me to reach the Jalukbari Campus within 20 minutes...Ahem...20 minutes! He expe...
